Yesterday, Florence Brocklesby, Founder and Principal of Bellevue Law, spoke at the Legal Geek Conference, sharing a thought-provoking perspective on what it truly means to build a sustainable law firm.

While environmental, social and governance (ESG) initiatives have become a priority for many organisations across the legal sector, Florence challenged the audience to consider an often-overlooked dimension of impact. Too often, ESG efforts within law firms focus on internal operations reducing carbon footprints, improving office practices, or enhancing diversity metrics. While these are important, they only represent part of the picture.

Florence’s talk focused on where lawyers can have their greatest influence: the advice they give and the clients they choose to work with.

Shifting the ESG Lens: From Internal to ‘Advised Impact’

At the heart of Florence’s message was the idea of “advised impact” the environmental and social effect of the legal advice provided to clients.

Lawyers play a critical role in shaping business decisions, structuring deals, and managing risk. Through this work, they have a unique opportunity to influence outcomes far beyond their own organisations. Yet, this impact is rarely measured or explicitly addressed within ESG strategies.

Florence highlighted the need for legal businesses to recognise this influence and take intentional steps to ensure that their advice contributes positively to both environmental and social outcomes.

Embedding Sustainability into Legal Advice

Rather than treating ESG as a separate initiative, Florence advocated for embedding sustainability and responsibility into the core of legal advisory work.

This requires a practical and thoughtful approach, one that considers not only what is legally permissible, but also what is responsible, ethical, and aligned with long-term sustainability goals.

By doing so, law firms can:

  • Support clients in making more sustainable and responsible decisions
  • Strengthen long-term client relationships through values-led advice
  • Enhance their own ESG credentials in a meaningful and authentic way
  • Contribute to broader societal and environmental progress

Importantly, Florence emphasised that this approach does not come at the expense of commercial success. On the contrary, aligning legal advice with sustainability can enhance both firms’ and clients’ bottom lines, as well as their ESG performance.

The Bellevue Law Approach

Florence also shared how Bellevue Law has been putting these principles into practice through its Sustainable and Responsible Legal Advice Pledge.

This initiative reflects a commitment to integrating sustainability into the firm’s advisory work, ensuring that ESG considerations form part of the decision-making process when advising clients.

Central to this approach is a willingness to ask difficult questions about who the firm works with, the nature of the work it undertakes, and the long-term impact of the advice it provides.

Asking the Tough Questions

A key theme of Florence’s talk was the importance of courage and reflection within the legal profession.

Building a truly sustainable law firm is not just about policies or pledges it requires firms to critically examine their role in the wider business ecosystem. This includes asking fundamental questions such as:

  • Are we working with clients whose activities align with our values?
  • How does our advice influence environmental and social outcomes?
  • Are we enabling positive change, or simply facilitating the status quo?

These are not always easy questions to answer, but Florence argued that they are essential for any firm seeking to make a genuine impact.

An Inspiring Conversation at Legal Geek

The Legal Geek Conference provided the perfect backdrop for these discussions, bringing together forward-thinking professionals to explore the future of the legal industry.

Reflecting on the event, Florence highlighted a number of memorable moments from the unique setting and journey to Woolwich, to engaging conversations on AI adoption and reconnecting with familiar faces from earlier in her career.

Most importantly, the event sparked meaningful dialogue around how the legal sector can evolve to meet the challenges of today’s world and the role lawyers can play in driving positive change.

Looking Ahead

As ESG continues to shape the future of business, the legal profession has a crucial role to play. Florence Brocklesby’s message is clear: true sustainability in law goes beyond internal operations it extends to the advice given, the clients served, and the impact created.

For firms willing to embrace this broader perspective, there is an opportunity not only to lead the way in ESG, but to build practices that are both commercially successful and purpose-driven.
