Careers at Bellevue Law

Work + Life

Bellevue Law has been built around the belief that it is possible to combine a rewarding legal career with a satisfying work-life balance.

We offer an alternative to the long-hours culture traditionally associated with the legal sector, which so often creates wellbeing challenges and acts as a barrier to those with caring responsibilities, particularly women.

We are equally committed to ethical and responsible business practices: we were the first law firm to be accredited by the Good Business Charter, and in March 2024 were then only the fifteenth UK law firm to become a certified B Corp.  You can find more information about our environmental, social and governance (ESG) commitments and read our latest Impact Report here

The result is a supportive, friendly working environment where our team performs fulfilling, meaningful work without compromising their personal and family lives.  In our autumn 2024 annual team survey:

This mirrors the results of our 2023 participation in a trial of The Law Firm Maturity Index (LFMI), which assesses a law firm’s “organisational maturity” based on “Organisation Health Indicators” such as purpose, human value, values and principles, learning agility, and trust and collaboration.  Bellevue Law’s LFMI ranking was ‘Band ‘A’, indicating an extremely mature and responsible business, and our team’s wellbeing and engagement were found to be strong and central to our success.

Senior Consultants

The majority of our team are Senior Consultant lawyers specialising in workplace law and commercial disputes.

Experienced lawyers, typically with 10 years + PQE gained in private practice or in-house, they join us:

Our consultants do not have chargeable hour targets, and can choose how much, when and where they work.  Of course, we expect them to manage and fulfill their client commitments to the highest standards – and our outstanding client feedback shows that they do – but beyond that, they are free to create the work/life ratio that works for them individually.

This looks different for everyone: some reduce their workloads over the school holidays or around their caring commitments; some balance periods of more intensive work with time off; and some have particular times of day when they choose to do most of their work.  And our fee-share model rewards our team generously for their excellent work.

Lawyers can choose to work from our Central London head office, from a selection of serviced office spaces across and beyond London, or from home.  While self-employed, they are part of a friendly, collegiate team with a host of opportunities for in-person and online collaboration, regular training and social events.  They also receive access to excellent technology, resources and administrative support.

We offer a rewarding platform for entrepreneurial lawyers looking to transition their client-base.  And for those who join us without a following – whether from a much larger firm or after a career break – we have work to share as well as providing extensive business development support.

In fact, several of our team have joined us with no clients, but gone on to achieve legal directory recognition for their practices.  We know from experience that great lawyers will succeed in our model, and empower our team to build deep client relationships and pursue the work that really interests them.  We are always happy to have open and transparent discussions about this with potential hires.

Business Operations Professionals

Equally important is the team that supports our lawyers, giving their colleagues the same high standards of care and support as we provide to our clients.  Our philosophy is simple: we hire talented, committed and kind people, and support and trust them to do great work.

Our whole operations team – including our leadership team – also works flexibly, whether part-time, remotely or on a hybrid basis.

Associates, Trainee Solicitors and Paralegals

We also have a small but growing team of employed Associates, Trainee Solicitors and Paralegals.

Associate roles combine taking the lead on appropriate matters, supporting Senior Consultants and helping to train and develop our junior lawyers. Chargeable hour targets for our Associates are very reasonable, reflecting our commitment to ensuring our lawyers have time for business development, professional training and ESG commitments within working hours, as well as a life outside work.

We have occasional vacancies for Paralegals starting out in their legal careers, with the possibility of training contracts and support through the Solicitors Qualifying Examination, for suitable candidates. Our first Trainee Solicitor, who initially joined us as a Paralegal, has recently qualified and become an Associate.
